This is the first edition, first state of Reid's map of Pennsylvania, the first map to correctly delineate the boundary between New York State and Pennsylvania.
Reid’s American Atlas was issued to accompany William Winterbotham’s History of America in 1796. This was the second atlas published in the United States. Several of the maps he used had been issued in the accompanying atlas issued in London by John Russell in 1785 but at least fifteen were newly engraved. This map of Pennsylvania was one of these new maps and is closely based on the map issued by Matthew Carey in his American Atlas of 1795. [USA9199] |
