This is one of the earliest available maps of Kentucky. This example is from Reid's American Atlas, published in 1796 and the second American Atlas published in the United States.
Unlike many of the maps in Reid’s atlas, the source of this map can be traced to the atlas accompanying William Winterbotham’s London edition his “History of America” first issued in 1785. This helps to explain several of the geographical inaccuracies present of the map, together with its note of many of the post Revolutionary War land grants marked on the map, such as land reserved for the New Jersey Company, the Donation Lands from the Commonwealth of Virginia and the lands of the notorious Symmes Purchase, here labelled simply as Col. Simmes.
The source map for Kentucky can be traced to John Russell’s map first published in London as a companion piece to the London edition of Winterbotham’s “History”. This example was issued in Reid’s “American Atlas”, the much expanded companion volume to Winterbotham’s work published in America. [USA9200] |
