This beautiful map is from Bellin's superb and rare atlas "Le Petit Atlas Maritime". Appointed France's first 'Ingenieur hydrographe de la Marine', Bellin carried out major surveys, first of the coasts of France and later of all the known coasts of the world. This huge undertaking resulted in a very large number of sea charts of the highest quality.
Angra is the historical capital of the Azores; it is also the archipelago's oldest city, dating back to 1450. The port became particularly important as a refueling point for Portuguese carracks bringing spices and produce back from South East Asia and the Americas. [AFR3904] |
