Nigeria showing the supposed course of the Chadda River (now the Benue) from Lake Chad into the Niger (here called the Kwara River) and out to the Gulf of Guinea.
Captain Allen's hypothesis that Lake Chad eventually emptied into the Gulf of Guinea was eventually proven to be incorrect, though at peak flood times the two water systems do still connect, so there was some merit to the theory.
