RARE Ptolemaic map of part of North Africa, specifically the coast of Algeria, featuring galleons and sea monsters. This map was originally drawn by Livio Sanuto for a planned edition of Ptolemy's Geographia, but he died after only finishing the general part and the maps of Africa.
Giulio Sanuto, his brother, adapted this map along with eleven other maps of Africa drawn by Livio before his death for publication in the Geographia Dell'Africa (Venice, 1588).
The engraving is delicate, especially in the hill shading and in some of the smaller place names, though the printing appears to have been quite sloppy as the ink is smudged in several places. This is quite common for maps printed in Venice at this time. |
