Description:

|
Early woodcut map of the Rhine River Valley from Basel, Switzerland to Frankfurt, Germany through Alsace and Lorraine. From the 1541 Vienne edition of Ptolemy's Geography edited by Michael Servetus, published by Gaspar Treschel, and using woodblocks first produced by Laurent Fries in 1522. This map is a reduced version of Martin Waldseemuller's 1513 map of the Rhine Valley, though the region would have been very familiar to Laurent Fries as the town of Colmar, where Fries himself lived and worked, appears on the map.
