Description:

|
The fortress was built by the English during the 17th century in an attempt to fortify and protect the island. It was very important as a refuelling port for ships returning from South East Asia, even more so as the Dutch had gained control of the Cape of Good Hope. The castle in James Town was the first fortification to be built, noted on this map as the ‘Maison du Gouverneur’. [AFR4342] |
