Intricate woodcut view of the Battle of Lepanto, the famous naval battle of 1571 in which the combined fleet of the Catholic Holy League (Spain, Venice, Genoa, the Papal States, Tuscany, and the Holy Roman Empire) defeated the Ottoman navy. Lepanto was the last major naval battle fought between oar-powered galleys and marked the end of Ottoman naval domination in the Mediterranean. It is credited by some scholars with preventing the Ottoman Empire from expanding further into Europe. This view was published in Tomaso Porcacchi's isolario (book of islands), L'isole piu famose.
