Ptolemaic map of Central Asia east of the Caspian Sea, including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. This region was historically known as Scythia, Sogdiana, and Bactria after the nomadic groups who inabited the region. This map was printed in the 1541 edition of Ptolemy's Geographia with maps by Laurent Fries/Martin Waldseemuller, published by Gaspar Treschel. The map's geography is based on data compiled by the ancient Greco-Roman geographer Claudius Ptolemy in the 2nd Century AD. [AS1205] |
