Detailed map of the border region of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and China. This region became strategically important during the Great Game, a cold war between Britain and Russia over control of Central Asia and India.
Lake Balkhash and Issyk-Kul, two of the great Central Asian lakes are prominently marked, as are Almaty and Bishkek (labeled Pishpek). The route of a Russian expedition under Pyotr Semenov to the Tianshan mountains is marked with a red line.
