Description:

Sea chart of the Bering Strait between Russia and Alaska. The Aleutian Islands are mapped particularly well, though the Alaskan coastline itself is still quite rough. From the explorer Martin Sauer's account of the 1786-94 expedition in search of a Northwest Passage. Sauer accompanied Joseph Billings, a fellow Englishman, who was tasked by the Russian empress, Catherine the Great, with determining whether such a passage existed. The route of their survey ship is marked on the map, as is an overland track from Okhotsk to the Kolyma River.
