Description:
Early woodcut map of Switzerland from the 1535 edition of Ptolemy's Geographia, edited by Michael Servetus. This map was reduced by Laurent Fries from Martin Waldseemuller's rare 1513 map. It is one of 24 modern maps not based on classical Ptolemaic knowledge added as an update to Ptolemy's geography.

The map is flipped with north at the bottom of the page - the Alps and the Gotthardpass can be seen just below the title banderole.The large body of water in the upper-left corner of the map is the Bodensee. Geneva, which at the time was not yet part of the Old Swiss Confederacy.
