Description:

Joseph Nicolas Nicollet was a scientist and mathematician who emigrated to the United States in 1832. He organised and led an expedition in search of the source of the Mississippi from 1836-1837. After joining the U.S. Corps of Topographical Engineers he surveyed the upper Mississippi and Missouri rivers with J.C. Fremont. His maps of the Mississippi river appear to be the first to have been based on mathematical calculations and astronomical observations. [USA6913] |
