Alaska and the Bering Strait. Hydrographic chart by the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey. Supervised by Thomas Corwin Mendenhall, a self-taught physicist and meteorologist and the first professor hired by The Ohio State University (in 1873). As commissioner of the Coast and Geodetic Survey, Mendenhall was also responsible for determining the official boundary between Alaska and Canada. While lecturing in physics at Tokyo Imperial University in 1878, he also helped to found the Seismological Survey of Japan. Original colour. [USA6952] |
