Jodocus Hondius: America Noviter Delineata

Map: tempMid

Cartographer: Jodocus Hondius
Title: America Noviter Delineata
Date: 1630
Published: Amsterdam
Width: 22 inches / 56 cm
Height: 16 inches / 41 cm
Map ref: AMER2064
Description:
Rare and exquisite map of the Americas with miniature bird's-eye city views in the upper and lower borders, and with indigenous figures in local costume decorating the right and left borders.

This map was engraved by Jansson and derived from Jodocus Hondius's map of 1618, but with the portraits reversed and an updated depiction of Tierra del Fuego. The two inset maps show new discoveries in the Arctic and Antarctic region, though both maps are still largely hypothetical.

The loss to the upper corner of the map is a result of a crack in the copper-plate which appeared around 1630, seven years after the plate was engraved. Almost all known examples have this missing corner, suggesting that Jansson was happy to continue printing the map despite its obvious damage. This was not uncommon at the time as copper-engraving was an expensive practice and reworking the entire plate might have been ruinous for the publisher.
