Description:

Sanson's landmark map of North America showing California as an island. The first map to show all five of the Great Lakes in a recognizable form, and the first to name Lakes Superior and Ontario. Lake Superior and Lake Michigan (here labeled as Lac des Puans) are left open-ended at their western ends.
Curiously, Sanson locates "Nouvelle Amsterdam" (New York) on an island off the coast of New Holland. He also labels Delaware as "N. Suede", the first cartographic representation of the Swedish colony founded in 1638. Original hand-colour. [AMER2067]
