Description:
Large and beautifully-engraved sea chart of Martinique with a grand title cartouche, rhumb lines, four compass roses, and a sketched view of the island. Roads, settlements, and mountainous areas are marked, as are safe anchorages.
The island is divided by colour into three sections, one belonging to the Jesuits, another to the Dominicans, and the last to the Capucins. These three holy orders were tasked by Louis XIV with repressing the island's largely Protestant Huguenot community and converting them back to Catholicism.
