Beautifully engraved title page featuring four successive 17th century Holy Roman Emperors (labelled in manuscript above) seated behind a large pair of globes, one terrestrial and the other celestial. The emperors in question, Rudolf II, Ferdinand II, Ferdinand III, and Leopold I, ruled the Holy Roman Empire from 1576 to 1705. This includes the period of religious warfare known as the Thirty Years' War. This image, designed and engraved by Philip Kilian, was used as the title page for several astronomical texts during the late 17th century, including Historia Coelestis (1666) by Albert Curtz, an expansion on the work of Tycho Brahe.
The title of the piece translates roughly to "Both are embellishing", a confusing title given the illustration. The putti floating above each of the emperors also carry cryptic banners with the Latin words for 'prepared', 'usurp', 'receive', and 'publish'. The author's meaning is unclear.
