Description:
|
|
The second of two world maps published in Cologne in 1596, and in neither case has the author positively been identified. This is the better known map attributed to Quad because it appears in the third edition of his travel book: Europae totius orbis terrarum, published by Johann Bussemacher. This map has been reduced from Mercator's world map of 1569, with the addition of the figure of Christ in an oval frame at the top and a quotation from Cicero at the bottom. South America still has its western bulge and the mythological islands of Groclant, Thule, Frischlant and S. Brandam are still included. [WLD2603] |
